< Back 07/16/2009

Thursday, July 16, 2009 A month after racing at New Jersey Motorsports Park as a part of Mazda Formula X, the drivers and crew of the BFGoodrich/Skip Barber National Presented by Mazda head south to Leeds, Ala. and the beautiful and challenging Barber Motorsports Park, joining the Rolex Sport Car Series at the Porsche 250 Presented by Legacy Credit Union for the next rounds of the 2009 campaign.

Entering Rounds 7 & 8 in the championship, the man to beat is second-year National driver Connor DePhillippi. The San Clemente, Calif. driver holds a 21-point lead over second place driver Felipe Polehtto on the strength of four wins, including weekend sweeps at the season opener at Sebring International Raceway and at the most recent event, Mazda Formula X at New Jersey Motorsports Park. Polehtto, another second year Skip Barber National driver has one win so far this season, picking up a victory at VIR in April. Court Vernon hasn’t won yet this season but his consistent finishes have him third in the standings ahead of Brett Smrz, who like Polehtto picked up a win at VIR while splitting time between the Skip Barber National and the SCCA Pro Racing Playboy MX-5 Cup. Another driver splitting time between two series, Kyle Marcelli rounds out the top five in the standings with two second place finishes and a third while also competing in IMSA Lites. MAZDASPEED Motorsports Development drivers are making good progress this season, with Vernon in third, Dennis Trebing in seventh, Sage Karam in ninth and Jason Toft in 12th in the points.

The weekend kicks off tomorrow (Friday) with back-to-back 20-minute qualifying sessions starting a 4:20 PM and again at 4:40. Race 1 (30 minutes) goes green on Saturday at 1:50 with Race 2 set to get underway Sunday afternoon at 4:45 (all times Central).
