Skip Barber alumni, instructors shine at Rolex 24 at Daytona

Monday, January 26, 2009 LAKEVILLE, Conn. – Skip Barber trained drivers and their instructors continued the tradition of strong performances at the annual Rolex 24, the opening round of the Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series, held this past weekend at Florida’s Daytona International Speedway.

20 drivers with Skip Barber Racing School ties competed in the Daytona Prototype class (DP). The top finishing Skip Barber driver in DP was Barber Pro Series alum Juan Pablo Montoya, who’s Chip Ganassi owned Lexus Riley was a close runner-up to the winning Brumos Porsche Riley driven by David Donohue. The top ten included former Barber Pro Series drivers Alex Gurney, Jon Fogarty and Danica Patrick, 2003 Skip Barber National Champion Raphael Matos, Skip Barber National drivers Brian Frisselle, the Taylor brothers; Jordan and Ricky, and Skip Barber MAZDASPEED Challenge driver Scott Tucker.

The GT class was a Skippy sweep, with Skip Barber trained drivers and instructors in each of the top three finishing cars. The winning TRG Porsche 911 GT3 was piloted by a group of drivers featuring Skippy alum and racing veteran R.J. Valentine along with instructor Andy Lally and. The runner-up TRG Porsche team included another instructor (and 2006 Rolex 24 GT class winning driver) Spencer Pumpelly with Skip Barber Race Series veterans Ted Ballou and Tim George, Jr. Another SBRS trained driver, Phillip Martien, helped pilot the Wright Motorsports GT3 to third in GT. In all, 39 Skip Barber trained drivers and instructors competed in the GT class in the Rolex 24.

The next stop for the Rolex Sports Car Series is Virginia International Raceway for the Bosch Engineering 250, when it headlines a weekend that includes Rounds 3&4 of the BFGoodrich/Skip Barber National Presented by Mazda.
