Ben Auriemma Starts the Season Red Hot Grabbing 3 First Place Finishes; Master Michael Auriemma Also Jump Starts Season in the MAZDASPEED Challenge

Braselton, GA. (May 20, 2014) – It was an exciting weekend in New Orleans for the kick-off of the 2014 Skip Barber Summer Series! Racers on both the Skip Barber Formula and MAZDASPEEDChallenge took to the NOLA Motorsport Park to start another exciting season of racing.  With more than 10 new drivers in the series, the race weekend saw a lot of new and returning talent and moreover, a lot of exhilarating competition.

In Group 1, Skip Barber Racing School scholarship winners Luke Gabin and Michai Stephens showcased their talent placing first and second in the first race of the season. Their win is a testament to the Skip Barber model highlighting the talent within the Skip Barber scholarship series. Returning contender Ben Auriemma also exceled during the kick-off of the season as he demonstrated his growth as a racer grabbing two podiums in Group 1. He continued his red-hot season start in Group 4 where he took an additional two wins.  Other notable Group 1 finishes include Rookie Jorge Herrera who placed second and Jackie Ding who took the third place spot in Race 2.

In the MAZDASPEED Challenge, Skip Barber veteran and master Michael Auriemma shined as he grabbed two first place finishes! Mac Korince and Bryan Hixon were right behind Auriemma and managed to garner a second and third place finish.

In the Master’s Group, veteran racers shined!  The masters group is designated to racers aged 40 and older. Grand Master Gus Doppes displayed his talent and determination grabbing a win in Race 1. Master Brian Cook also took home a podium in Race 1 and a first place finish in Race 2.  Other notable finishes include Grand Master Pat Daly who moved 6 spots to gain a 3rd place podium in Race 2.

In Group 4, it was a family affair as father and son duo, Ben Auriemma and Michael Auriemma grabbed the top two spots in Race 1 and 2. Other notable participants include Indycar Academy (ICA) standout George Weeterau who finished third overall in Race 1. Fellow ICA contender Ryan Summealso had a strong showing grabbing an 8th place finish in Race 1.

Racers of the Formula Skip Barber Summer Series will travel to Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca on May 28-30, 2014 for Rounds 3 & 4  and the 2014 Skip Barber Summer Series MAZDASPEEDChallenge will take to the track again on  June 18-22 at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Complex for Rounds 3 & 4.
