2006-07 Southern & Western Series Schedules Released
Friday, August 18, 2006 LAKEVILLE, Conn. – The Skip Barber Regional Race Series has released its 2006-2007 winter series race dates, marking one of the earliest schedule announcements in recent memory. Both series are six-weekend, 12-race championships, all at the famous venues that Skip Barber Racing is known for.
Of particular note is the Western Series’ visit to a brand-new circuit that’s been getting nothing but raves from professional drivers the world over – Miller Motorsports Park, in Tooele, Utah, just outside Salt Lake City.
2006-07 Western Race Series
When the Western Series opens, it will be at Miller, October 27-29. This past June, Skip Barber conducted a Three Day School at MMP, and Lead Instructor Steve DeBrecht reported back to Skip Barber Series Director Todd Snyder that “the facility is awesome. The layout and run-off are nearly perfect. Series drivers will find Miller a blast to race on.’’ (Click here for a ”3-D” video of a lap of Miller.) This is going to be cool…
Rounds three and four (December 8-10), then five and six (January 19-21), are at the Western Series ‘‘home base,’’ Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. There’s news there, too: The track just completed a major revamp, including better run-off in Turn Six and a complete repaving job. One of the world’s best race tracks is now even better. (Take a look at photos the Laguna folks took of the re-construction.)
Then, February 9-11, the Series heads to another neat track, one we haven’t been to since November of 1995: Thunderhill Raceway Park. North of Sacramento, Calif., in the town of Willows and just off I-5, this is a really fun 3.0-mile, 15-turn circuit that’s used a lot by the San Francisco Region of the SCCA. Click here and take a look at the track map; you can see how this is going to be a great Race Weekend.
The last four races of the year are back at Laguna: Rounds nine and 10 are Mar 2-4, and races 11 and 12 will be March 30-April 1.
2006-07 Southern Race Series
The Southern Series opens November 17-19, at a track many Skip Barber drivers call a favorite, Road Atlanta. (News you can use: According to NWS records, the average high temperature in Atlanta in November is a comfortable 63, and almost three of the month’s four weeks are either sunny or partly sunny skies.)
Rounds three and four are on the 12-hour [full] course at historic, always exciting Sebring International Raceway December 15-17, followed by Homestead Miami Speedway and its terrific Grand-Am layout (half road course, half oval) January 5-7.
Our traditional mid-February date at Sebring (the 12-hour course) is on the slate for the 16th through the 18th, then the Series heads to ever-improving Moroso Motorsports Park March 23-25.
Finally, there’s nothing like the thrill of the high banks at Daytona International Speedway! And that’s where the Skip Barber Southern Series has its season finale, April 13-15.
